Share to Compare

LMC's 5th annual Share to Compare Survey Seminar was held on August 26th.  Survey participants had a great opportunity to benchmark their employee benefit plans offerings and costs against 170 other Iowa employers.  In addition, they received an update on the Healthcare Reform changes that are becoming effective in 2010 and future years.

There is still an opportunity to participate in the survey.  For further information or to receive a copy of the Milliman presentation, contact Mary Johnson at LMC.  mary.johnson@lmcins.com

By Duke Medicine News and Communications

DURHAM, N.C. -- Gaining too much weight can be as bad for an employer's bottom line as it is for a person's waistline.  A Duke University Medical Center Analysis found that obese workers filed twice the number of workers' compensation claims, had seven times higher medical costs from those claims and lost 13 times more days off work from work injury or illness than did non-obese workers.  Workers with higher risk jobs were found to be more likely to file workers' compensation claims, and obese workers in high-risk jobs incurred the highest costs, both economically and medically.

Vacationing in Canada?

If you will be driving in Canada during the summer vacation season, don't forget to carry a Non-Resident Inter-Province Motor Vehicle Liability Insurance Card (Canadian ID card).  Failure to have this card can result in a fine if you are stopped for a traffic violation or are involved in an accident.

Long Term Care

The costs associated with providing care for those who need assistance in their homes continues to rise according to a recent report.  MORE  At $20.50 per hour, even a couple of hours of care per day is nearly $15,000 per year.  Costs for care in an assisted living facility or skilled care nursing center are even higher.

Safety Programs and the Impact to the Bottom Line

If you could save your company money, improve productivity and increase employee morale, would you?  According to OSHA, workplaces that establish safety and health management systems can reduce their injury and illness costs by 20 to 40 percent.  MORE
